History

People

Bhutan being one of the isolated countries of South Asia includes a diverse community with Bhutia, Nepalese, and Sharchop being the major ethnic groups of Bhutan. The majority of the people belong to the Bhutia community composed of around 50% of the total population of the country and have been residing since the 9th century. Dzongkha is the most spoken language of the country followed by Nepali and other regional languages. The people of Bhutan are friendly and hardworking with agriculture and tourism being one of the main sources of livelihood.

Bhutan showcases a rich culture and tradition that comprises the mixture of traditions of the top three ethnic groups of Bhutia, Nepalese and Sharchop. Most of the houses are 2 storied structures with top floors being used for accommodation and the lower part used for livestock. The houses are built with a mixture of mud and stone. Yak is the main source of livelihood as it provides milk as well as meat. Most of the people follow Buddhism followed by Hinduism. The country is also renowned for its unique architectural designs, wood carvings and many more.

How To Reach

Air : The only international airport of Bhutan is Paro International Airport which lies at a distance of 7km from the city of Paro. The airport connects direct flights from major parts of Indian cities.

Train : It is not possible to reach Bhutan by train as there are no railway stations in the country. However, Hasimara Railway Station is the nearest railway station located in India at a distance of 17 km away from the city of Phuentsholing.

Road : Travelling to Bhutan by road is one of the most popular modes of transport where you can reach Bhutan while travelling through the city of Siliguri located at a distance of around 150 km from Phuentsholing.
